José Cândido Nogueira – Santo Huberto Portugal

José Cândido Nogueira passed away on the 14th of March 2025 aged 98.  He was the first Portuguese huntsman of Equipagem de Santo Huberto (ESH), a Portuguese hunt established in 1950. After assisting as whipper-in to the several British professionals who served as huntsmen in the first years of ESH – John Long, Richard Thompson, Bob Kemp, Frank Bishop and Ted Fitzpatrick – José Nogueira was appointed Huntsman, carrying the horn until 1985, when he was succeeded by his son, Paulo Nogueira.

José Nogueira was a remarkable huntsman, combining the qualities of a profound connoisseur and lover of nature, animals and the territories where he hunted, particularly everything to do with foxes, a keen intuition and passion for hunting, a natural ability to breed and train the hounds and conduct the pack, as well as an always gentle and affable, albeit determined, human nature. For more than 25 years he provided the best sport to ESH members. It was with him that, at the age of six, I started hunting; it was under his supervision that I started whipping as an amateur; and it was he who taught me much of what I know and love about the chase. I owe him unforgettable days of countryside, horses, hounds and hunting.
